| Requirements for receiving the certificate | The requirement for receiving product certification on Fairtrade programme, producers and dealers comply with social, economic and environmental standards. In terms of social standards, it typically looks the process of production takes into account the sustainable development of the target group seeking certification. Fairtrade deals mostly with organised farmers’ groups such as cooperatives. But for products that small farmers cannot produce in sufficient quantity and quality, companies can also be certified. In such cases, Fairtrade targets workforce group as requirement for receiving the certificate. So as a social standard, it incorporates all key conventions enforced by the International Labor Organisation (ILO). These include aspects such as adherence to a minimum price and payment of a premium –Minimum Price to be used by producer groups for community must be used. The standards also incorporate a whole series of ILO conventions which regulate employment conditions, including child labour. Also health and safety conditions at production facilities must be maintained. When it comes to environmental criteria, it looks at any chemicals used, as well as at personal protection for the workers who handle these chemicals. | |
